You will be informed by express of your being appointed Chief Magestrate [sic] of the State, which I am certain will give general satisfaction through out it.
We never stood so much in need of wisdom and a conciliating spirit in our Councils, as we do at present; and therefore it is, that I most ardently wish that you would take the helm of our ship (which at present requires a skilful [sic] pilot) if it should be only for one year, in that case your family need not be removed.
If you do not accept the Government, we shall be split into party and faction, and what will become of us God only knows.
