Description	Letter dated November 11, 1788 from Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer to Thomas Johnson. In this letter Jenifer, a prominent politician from Maryland, refers to the selection of Johnson on November 10, 1788 to become the next governor of Maryland (he had already served three terms, 1777-1779). Jenifer praises Johnson and hopes that he will accept the position. Johnson would turn down the job, however.

Transcript	Annapolis Nov. 11th. 1788 Dear Sir , You will be informed by express of your being appointed Chief Magestrate [sic] of the State, which I am certain will give general satisfaction through out it . We never stood so much in need of wisdom and a conciliating spirit in our Councils, as we do at present; and therefore it is, that I most ardently wish that you would take the helm of our ship (which at present requires a skilful [sic] pilot) if it should be only for one year, in that case your family need not be removed . If you do not accept the Government, we shall be split into party and faction, and what will become of us God only knows . Our friend MC, whom in general is
