Description	Letter dated January 19, 1863* from U.S. Army soldier George Washington Riggs to his mother, Frances Riggs. In the letter, he discusses the possibility of having to go back to Cumberland Gap, but says that if they go they will perish from cold. He also writes about the health and wellbeing of some of his fellow soldiers, most likely young men his mother would know from home. He indicates that he should be done with military service on February 22. (*Editor's note: Although the letter is dated 1863, it appears that the actual year was 1864. Riggs served in the United States Army 4th Ohio Independent Cavalry Battalion, which was not organized until the summer of 1863. In January 1864, the regiment would have been camped near Richmond, Kentucky, after having experienced action at Cumberland Gap and other areas along the Kentucky/Tennessee/Virginia border in previous months. In the letter, he mentions mustering out in February. According to records, this regiment mustered out in February 1864. At the bottom of Page 2 is writing that does not appear to have anyhing to do with the rest of the letter and has not been included in the transcript.)

Biographical/Historical Note	George Washington Riggs was born in Meigs County, Ohio on November 1, 1846. He mustered into the United States Army 4th Ohio Independent Cavalry Battalion, Company C at Camp Dennison near Cincinnati, Ohio in June 1863. His occupation at the time of enlistment was recorded as "farmer." During Riggs' military service, his battalion participated in the pursuit of Confederate Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan's troops after their incursion into Ohio during July 1863. The battalion was sent to Kentucky in September 1863 and participated in skirmishes at Cumberland Gap and other places along the Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia border. He mustered out of the service in February 1864, eventually returning to Meigs County, Ohio where he married his wife, Rachel Eleanor (nee Lisle) Riggs. They had seven children. In the last two decades of his life, he moved to Ravenswood, West Virginia, where he died on February 11, 1923.
