Dear mother[,] I seat my self to let you know that I am well and I hope when thes fiew [these few] lines comes [sic] to hand they will find you the same[.] I reseved [received] a letter from you last night and was glad to hear that you was well[. Y]ou wanted to know if I had enlisted or knot [not.] I have knot[.] ... I do knot entend [intend] to until I cum [come] home and then I expect to stay[.] thier [There] was an order came last night for us to go to Cumberland Gap and I do knot like that actand [action a] bit[,] for if wee [we] go wee will all moast [almost] perish with the coald [cold.] I wood rather go to hell than to go to the gap[,] for wee will starve all moast [almost] now[.] I do knot want you to worey [worry] about mee[,] for I will take car of my self[.] they cant ceap us [They can't keep us]
