Camp on the Battlefield near Big Shanty Station, Ga. June 26th 1864
Respected Cousin,
With the greatest of pleasyure [sic] I seat my self to drop you a few lines to inform you of my health. I am well at the present, and I hope that these few scratches, may find you well, Wash[.] We have been fighting for over a month, and hant [sic] half done yet. We have got the rebbles [sic] on a big mountain, about half way up to heaven[,] and they can almost throw stones down on our heads, from the top. [The] day before yesterday we thought that they had evaporated, and our general sent out three regiments to re[c]lime [sic] up the mountain, the unlucky 53rd was one of them. [T]hey started up and they found out that they were still there. [T]hey commenced to peckinging [sic] it in to our fellows
