Description	Letter dated August 16, 1863 from U.S. Army soldier George Washington Riggs to his brother, Willard A. Riggs, and his mother, Frances Riggs. The letter was written from Camp Dennison near Cincinnati, Ohio. He writes that he does not know where his regiment will go yet, but he hopes "down South." He says that some of the other soldiers are homesick, and talks about some of the young men they both know from home. He also describes the food they are given and discusses the good officers in his company and his pay.

Biographical/Historical Note	George Washington Riggs was born in Meigs County, Ohio on November 1, 1846. He mustered into the United States Army 4th Ohio Independent Cavalry Battalion, Company C at Camp Dennison near Cincinnati, Ohio in June 1863. His occupation at the time of enlistment was recorded as "farmer." During Riggs' military service, his battalion participated in the pursuit of Confederate Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan's troops after their incursion into Ohio during July 1863. The battalion was sent to Kentucky in September 1863 and participated in skirmishes at Cumberland Gap and other places along the Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia border. He mustered out of the service in February 1864, eventually returning to Meigs County, Ohio where he married his wife, Rachel Eleanor (nee Lisle) Riggs. They had seven children. In the last two decades of his life, he moved to Ravenswood, West Virginia, where he died on February 11, 1923.

Transcript	Camp Denisan [Dennison] August the 16 AD 1863 Dear mother and brother I take this opportunity to let you know that I am well and I hope these fiew [few] lines will find you the same[.] Wee ar [We are] at Camp Denisan 17 miles f[rom] Sinsinnatia [Cincinnati.] Wee ar under marching orders[.] Wee do not know whar [where] wee will go but I hope that wee will go down South[.] Sum [Some] of the boys ar giten [are getting] home sick[.] The hevy artillrey [heavy artillery] is hear [here.] Carl Stuart and William Marke is in Rusel Cumpney [Captain Russell's Company.] I am giten as fat as a hog[.] Wee have light bread and beaf paaske [meaning unclear] potatos and wee press all the pyes [sic] wee want and aples [sic] and peaches[.]
