Description	Letter dated November 9, 1864 from U.S. Army soldier Willard A. Riggs to his brother, George Washington Riggs. In this brief letter, Riggs mentions President Lincoln winning reelection the day before by a large margin. He also says that he may not be able to write again for some time. [Editor's note: At the top of the letter, it appears that Riggs has written from a Camp Near Vining St. The regiment that Riggs was serving in at the time, the 53rd Ohio Infantry, traveled from Gadsden, Alabama to Savannah, Georgia during November of 1864 as part of Sherman's Atlanta campaign and March to the Sea. U.S. troops occupied the area around Vinings, Georgia, outside of Atlanta, during this period. Therefore, it is possible that Riggs is referring to a location near Vinings, Georgia.]

Biographical/Historical Note	Willard A. Riggs was born in Meigs County, Ohio in 1845. He mustered into the United States Army 87th Ohio Infantry, Company H in 1862. In June 1862, the regiment traveled to Baltimore, Maryland to defend the city. In late July, the regiment headed to the western part of the state, where it was involved in skirmishes at Berlin and Point of Hooks. The regiment also participated in the defense and surrender of Harper's Ferry, West Virginia in September 1862. Riggs later became part of the 53rd Ohio Infantry, Company B, which was involved in military actions throughout the South, including the siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi, the Atlanta campaign, and Sherman's March to the Sea. Census records document that Willard Riggs lived in West Virginia and Pennsylvania after the war. The 1900 Census indicates that he resided in East Deer, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania with his wife, Lucy, and children. His occupation is listed as laborer. He died in 1906.
