Head Quarters 8th Penn[sylvani]a Cavalry Nov 9th 1861.
Dear Ma,
Please deliver to the bearer Sargeant [sic] Stubbs my my pup Dred, my pocket flask that is in one of the pidgeon [sic] holes in the centre of my desk, the one that closes with a door, and my new watch chain. We have been officially notified that we are the 8th not the 1st Penna. Cavalry, as the heading of my letter shows. We expect our pay next week, and it wont come any too soon, as there aint 5 dollars, in the possession of all our officers put together. We have to get all our things on trust of the Sutler and pay accordingly. Comp. [Company] D is now worth 20 cts [cents] which we are saving for an emergency in the possession of Cap. [Captain Pennock] Huey. I am going to try to get a pass to go after Ned Shoenberger who is over here somewhere. I will write soon again with love
