Description	Letter written Sunday evening (August 28, 1864) from E. (Edward) Carpenter of No. 242 South 3rd Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Mrs. Joseph Wistar, Major Joseph W. Wistar's mother, residing at Church Lane, Germantown, Pennsylvania. In this two-page letter Mr. Carpenter tells Mrs. Wistar how he heard about the wounding of Major Wistar and Captain (Robert) Oldham of the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry at a battle near Petersburg, Virginia, of their possible transfer by steamer to hospital in Philadelphia, and of his plans to meet Major Wistar and bring him to his house to recuperate until the major is able to travel home. (Editor's note: The dating of this letter, i.e., August 28, 1864, derives from the details of the letter regarding Major Wistar's wounding and from the known dates of two other letters written by Major Wistar within a week of this letter. The author of this letter is believed to be Edward Carpenter 2nd, the father of Lieutenant J. (James) Edward Carpenter of the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment.)

Transcript	No[.] 242 South 3rd Street Sunday evening Mrs. Wistar , We very much regret to see the names of Major Wistar and Captain Oldham of the 8th Pa [Pennsylvania] Cavalry among those of the wounded in the Cavalry engagement near Petersburg on the 23[r]d instant . The uncle of Captain Oldham called this morning in my absence. In conversation with Mrs[.] Carpenter he told her that he had been informed that a Hospital Steamer with sick and wounded would probably arrive tonight or tomorrow and that it was quite probable those officers might be on board . We have had a room prepared for the Major and I have made arrangements to be immediately apprised of the arrival of the Steamer as soon as she reaches the wharf. If he should be on board I will have him taken to our house where we will be glad to keep him until he can be safely and comfortably taken home.
