Description	Document dated January 7, 1868 of the notice or "testimony" of the Kennett Square Religious Society of Friends disowning Pennock Huey, a member of the group and a former officer in the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry. In this two-page document, Isaac Martin, clerk of the Kennett Monthly Meeting of Friends, gives the group's reasons for reluctantly disowning Huey, namely, his actions as a member of the military, his marriage to a woman outside of the community by use of the services of a "hireling minister", his failure to respond to the community regarding his actions, and his lack of desire to belong to the group. Despite this drastic measure, the group desires that one day Huey will be "rightly restored".

Biographical/Historical Note	Pennock Huey (1828-1903) was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, the son of Jacob Huey, a farmer, and his wife Sarah. According to official records, he enlisted in and received his commission as full captain in the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry on September 17, 1861. He was promoted to full major on January 1, 1892 and to full colonel on June 25, 1863. On May 3, 1863, during the Battle of Chancellorsville, he led the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry in a desperate charge that resulted in the death of 3 officers and 30 men. A year later (June 24, 1864) he was captured at the Battle of St. Mary's Church and imprisoned at various locations near Columbia, South Carolina, including Roper Hospital. On December 9, 1864, he was paroled during a prisoner exchange and returned to the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry. On January 23, 1865, he was mustered out, and on March 13, 1865, he received promotion to Brevet Brigadier-General. After the war he married Elizabeth Waln Wistar and became a businessman.

Transcript	Pennock Huey, having had his birth and Education in the Religious Society of Friends; but has so far departed from the Testimony and Principles of the Society as to engage in the performance of Military Services;-- and he has also married a woman not in Membership with Friends by the assistance of a hireling Minister; and having been visited by a committee of this Meeting, has declined making any acknowledgment, to the Meeting; and does not desire to retain his right of membership in the Society; we therefore disown him as a member of our Religious Society, until he may be enabled to become rightly restored, which that he may is our decree.-- Signed in and by direction of Kennett Monthly Meeting of Friends held first month seventh 1868 Isaac Martin, Clerk
