Description	Letter dated October 29, 1865 from John C. Martin, former Captain and Commandant, "Camp Sorghum", Columbia, South Carolina, to Colonel Pennock Huey, former prisoner of war held for a while in Columbia, South Carolina, now residing in West Chester, Pennsylvania. In this three-page letter Martin tells Huey that while he (Martin) was on duty at Greenville, South Carolina, his home near Anderson, South Carolina was destroyed by a Federal cavalry raid under General (Simeon Batcheldor) Brown (1812-1893) on May 1, 1865. With a wife, three of his own children, and two adopted children to look after and no money to start up his business, Martin asks Huey if there is "any chance of getting any employment" in the Philadelphia area. He mentions the trial of Captain Heinrich Hartmann Wirtz (1823-1865), former Confederate Commander of the Andersonville, Georgia prison camp, and asks Huey to put in a good word for him if other commanders of prison camps are brought to trial.

Octo[be]r 29th 1865 Col Pennock Huey Westchester, Pa My Dear Sir , It is now nearly one year since we parted, and what changes have passed over me in that short period, from affluence, I have been reduced to positive penury . The War terminating as I[t] did, left me completely ruined in my business, so that it has been impossible for me to renew it, in addition to which Genl Brown[']s [General Simeon Batcheldor Brown (1812-1893)] Cavalry Raid through this place on the 1st and 2nd of May last completely broke me up, and my family--I was stationed at Greenville S. C. at the time and my Wife was alone, they completely rifled my house[,] taking every thing of value they could find
