Description	Letter dated September 6, 1864 from Colonel Pennock Huey, prisoner of war, Roper (Hospital) Military Prison, Charleston, South Carolina, to his father, Jacob Huey, Hamorton, Chester County, Pennsylvania. In this one-page letter (pages 2 and 3 are the front and back of the envelope) Colonel Huey says he is doing as well as can be expected and looks forward to receiving a small box with articles of clothing and medicine requested earlier. He asks his father to obtain a bill of exchange in his name from England so he can draw on it to buy supplies. At the end of the letter he gives his full address as Charleston, South Carolina (Hilton Head), care of Wm. J. Gayer, Provost Marshal. On the back of the envelope is the name of the agent of exchange, Stewart L. Woodford, Lieutenant Colonel, 127 NYV (127th New York Volunteers). (Editor's note: Although during the war England was officially neutral, its colony in Nassau traded with the South for cotton and other contraband materials, some of which even came from the Northern states. English money was, therefore, as useful in the South as was Confederate money for a Northern prisoner and could be legally obtained by a Northern prisoner's relatives, which is what Pennock Huey is asking his father to do.)

Biographical/Historical Note	Pennock Huey (1828-1903) was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, the son of Jacob Huey, a farmer, and his wife Sarah. According to official records, he enlisted in and received his commission as full captain in the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry on September 17, 1861. He was promoted to full major on January 1, 1892 and to full colonel on June 25, 1863. On May 3, 1863, during the Battle of Chancellorsville, he led the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry in a desperate charge that resulted in the death of 3 officers and 30 men. A year later (June 24, 1864) he was captured at the Battle of St. Mary's Church and imprisoned at various locations near Columbia, South Carolina, including Roper Hospital. On December 9, 1864, he was paroled during a prisoner exchange and returned to the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry. On January 23, 1865, he was mustered out, and on March 13, 1865, he received promotion to Brevet Brigadier-General. After the war he married Elizabeth Waln Wistar and became a businessman.

Transcript	Roper Military Prison Charleston Sep 6th 1864 Dear Father Sinse [sic] I last wrote to you my health has improved. Our situation is more healthy, in fact our position is all that any prisoner could expect. I should like verry [sic] much to hear from you[.] I[']ve rec[eived] no letter from you sinse long before I was captured. I hope soon to see a small box from you, with some clothing[.] I am verry bad off, don[']t send anything in it but clothing and medacine [sic] as other things are not allowed . I also desire you to purchase and send to me in my nane [sic] a bill of exchange on England which I presume you can get at any brokers, that I may raise sone [sic] money.
