Description	Letter dated August 14, 1864 from Colonel Pennock Huey, prisoner of war, Charleston Military Prison, Charleston (Hilton Head), South Carolina, to his father, Jacob Huey. In this two-page letter Colonel Huey asks his father to send some clothing, medicine, and food, although he hopes for an exchange of prisoners. At present, who Baely and Broomall (page 2) are is not known. At the end of the letter (page 2) he gives his full address as Charleston Prison (Hilton Head), care of W. J. Gayer, Provost Marshal.

Biographical/Historical Note	Pennock Huey (1828-1903) was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, the son of Jacob Huey, a farmer, and his wife Sarah. According to official records, he enlisted in and received his commission as full captain in the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry on September 17, 1861. He was promoted to full major on January 1, 1892 and to full colonel on June 25, 1863. On May 3, 1863, during the Battle of Chancellorsville, he led the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry in a desperate charge that resulted in the death of 3 officers and 30 men. A year later (June 24, 1864) he was captured at the Battle of St. Mary's Church and imprisoned at various locations near Columbia, South Carolina, including Roper Hospital. On December 9, 1864, he was paroled during a prisoner exchange and returned to the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry. On January 23, 1865, he was mustered out, and on March 13, 1865, he received promotion to Brevet Brigadier-General. After the war he married Elizabeth Waln Wistar and became a businessman.

Transcript	Charleston Milt. [Military] Prison Dear Father There is nothing interesting in being a prisoner of war. I am in very bad condition for want of clothing. I wrote by last flag of truce for a suit of clothes and 2 suits of underclothes, which I desire to be cotton or linnen[,] [sic] one pair of shoes[,] all of cheap material, please send with these some medicine and 2/2 dozen papers of (Capsicum, pepper)[.] I will have to trouble you to send me another box containg [sic] sugar and coffee and some other eatables as soon as it is arranged that they can come through unless there is some prospect of an exchange, which I hope will come soon. I think there migh[t] be some arrangement made for [a] very special exchange by the authorities at Washington, please
