Description	Letter dated August 2, 1864 from Colonel Pennock Huey, prisoner of war, Charleston Prison (Hilton Head), South Carolina, to his father, Jacob Huey, Hamorton Post Office, Chester County, Pennsylvania. In this two-page letter Colonel Huey explains why he hasn't written for several months, namely, he was captured June 24, 1864 and hasn't been able to write. Telling his father he is in good health, he asks him to obtain a trunk left with Dr. (Jeremiah Bernard) Brinton (1835-1894), surgeon and Medical Purveyor of the Army of the Potomac, in Alexandria, Virginia, and send it along with other articles of clothing and sundries to him. He says also he has written to Colonel (Samuel) Wilson (1831-1903) to have his valice sent home to Westchester. At the end of the letter (page 2) he gives his full address as Charleston Prison (Hilton Head), care of W. J. Gayer, Provost Marshal. In the upper right hand corner of page 1, Huey mistakenly gives his address as Charleston, North Carolina when, in fact, he is in prison in South Carolina.

Biographical/Historical Note	Pennock Huey (1828-1903) was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, the son of Jacob Huey, a farmer, and his wife Sarah. According to official records, he enlisted in and received his commission as full captain in the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry on September 17, 1861. He was promoted to full major on January 1, 1892 and to full colonel on June 25, 1863. On May 3, 1863, during the Battle of Chancellorsville, he led the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry in a desperate charge that resulted in the death of 3 officers and 30 men. A year later (June 24, 1864) he was captured at the Battle of St. Mary's Church and imprisoned at various locations near Columbia, South Carolina, including Roper Hospital. On December 9, 1864, he was paroled during a prisoner exchange and returned to the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry. On January 23, 1865, he was mustered out, and on March 13, 1865, he received promotion to Brevet Brigadier-General. After the war he married Elizabeth Waln Wistar and became a businessman.

My health is good and I have been as fortunate as a prison[er] of war could expect .
