Description	Letter dated November 9, 1864 from Captain William J. Gayer, C.S.A., Assistant Adjutant General and Provost Marshal of Military Prisoners, Charleston, South Carolina, to Colonel Pennock Huey, prisoner of war, Columbia, South Carolina. In this two-page letter, Captain Gayer explains that the $200.00 he is enclosing for Colonel Huey arrived after Captain S. H. Sheldon replaced him (Gayer) as commander of prisoners of war in Columbia, South Carolina, but that when Captain Sheldon subsequently died, the monies were returned instead of being given to Colonel Huey. He was therefore sending this check for $200.00 to Colonel Huey through the new commander of prisoners of war Colonel R. S. Means and asked Colonel Huey to send a signed receipt. On the reverse side of the letter is written a note saying that a $200.00 check is enclosed.

Biographical/Historical Note	William J. Gayer was born January 2, 1833 in Charleston, South Carolina. He entered military service in 1861, becoming Assistant Adjutant General to General Gilbert S. Meem. About 1864 he became Provost Marshal of Military Prisons in Charleston. After the war he practiced law in Charleston. He died March 23, 1895 and is buried in that city’s Magnolia Cemetery . In the latter half of 1864, many Union officers imprisoned in Charleston, South Carolina were moved to a Confederate military prison in Columbia, South Carolina. That prison became known as Camp Sorghum. Colonel Pennock Huey (1828-1903) of the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry was among the Union prisoners of war held at Camp Sorghum when this letter was written.

Transcript	Office Provost Marshal General Department of South Carolina Georgia and Fl[orid]a Charleston Nov 9th 1864 Col Pennock Huey Prisoner of War Columbia S.C . Colonel[:] I enclose herewith my check on Bank of Charleston for Two hundred ($200.00) Dollars[,] the amount referred to in my note of 4th inst. In answer to numerous enquiries I beg leave to say that my connection with the Prisoners of War ceased when the late Captain S. H. Sheldon was placed in command of the Military Prisoners of War at this point. The funds recently sent to Columbia S.C. from this office were turned over to me after the demise of the officer to whom I have refered. [sic] Since the removal of the prisoners of war from this city all Boxes, Monies etc have been turned over to the Post Quarter Master who is directed to forward them to Columbia to Col R. S. Means for distribution under such regulations as have been established by the Confederate Authorities. You will please acknowledge receipt of the enclosed check .
