Description	Letter dated November 4, 1864 from Captain William J. Gayer, C.S.A., Assistant Adjutant General and Provost Marshal of Military Prisoners, Charleston, South Carolina, to Colonel Pennock Huey, prisoner of war, Columbia, South Carolina. In this two-page letter, Gayer writes that he has received $200.00 in Confederate notes in Huey's name from "G. W. Roberts", from which funds Huey may draw to buy supplies, such as stamps, locally. On the reverse side is written a similar note referring to Roberts. At present, it is not known who G. W. Roberts is. (Editor's note: The amount of money mentioned in this letter is not, at first, clear, since in the first sentence the amount is written as "two hundred ($200) dollars Confederate notes", whereas in the bottom left side of the page the amount is written as "$300". In a later letter, however, the amount is clearly indicated as "two hundred ($200.00/100) Dollars" (see MCW_MDCH_11-08-30_DON0008_0006). Also, the note on page 2 may have been added at a later time.)

Biographical/Historical Note	William J. Gayer was born January 2, 1833 in Charleston, South Carolina. He entered military service in 1861, becoming Assistant Adjutant General to General Gilbert S. Meem. About 1864 he became Provost Marshal of Military Prisons in Charleston. After the war he practiced law in Charleston. He died March 23, 1895 and is buried in that city’s Magnolia Cemetery . In the latter half of 1864, many Union officers imprisoned in Charleston, South Carolina were moved to a Confederate military prison in Columbia, South Carolina. That prison became known as Camp Sorghum. Colonel Pennock Huey (1828-1903) of the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry was among the Union prisoners of war held at Camp Sorghum when this letter was written.
