E. B. Jackson letter dated April 2, 1864

              Philadelphia April 2 1864.

D[ea]r. Sir,

Mrs. Elizabeth A. Hall has requested me to address you once more in her behalf. She has no resource but an appeal to your kindness and generosity. There is no roll at Harrisburg or Washington[,] nor has Col. Ruff [Colonel Charles F. Ruff (1818-1885)] any roll Showing that her Son John Hall late of Company "D" 8h Cavalry was at any time mustered into the Service of the United States, and the consequence is that she will never be able to obtain a pension until evidence of the mustering into the UStates is established with the Adjutant General. Her Son she thinks was enrolled at Washington [D. C.], if so, I apprehend he was a recruit after the Regiment had been mustered into the Service in this City, and was most probably Sworn into Service in that City before Some officer having authority to administer oaths. Any information you can give her or any thing you can do to aid her in establishing the fact will indeed be esteemed a great favor. In a former letter to me on the subject you said you thought
