Description	Confederate Bible owned by John F. Campbell. Inside the front cover is written in pencil: 'Found by Grand Pa Shirley on Gettysburg Battlefield July 7 1863.' As the inscription indicates, the Bible came into the possession of U.S. Army soldier Joseph Whitney Shirley during the Civil War. Note: Only front and back covers and pages that were written on were scanned.

Biographical/Historical Note	John F. Campbell may be Private John F. Campbell, Company D of Hampton's Legion, a group raised by Wade Hampton of South Carolina in 1861. South Carolina troops fought at Gettysburg on the first day near the Lutheran Seminary and on the second day near the Rose Farm. Although the inscription indicates that the Bible was discovered by Joseph Whitney Shirley on the Gettsyburg Battlefield on July 7, 1863, one of the scanned pages with handwriting matching that of John F. Campbell reads: 'J.F. Campbell December 24 1863' (or possibly 1868). Either date would indicate that the Bible was still in the possession of John F. Campbell months, or possibly years, after the battle of Gettysburg in July 1863. Therefore, the dates relating to the provenance of the Bible are a bit unclear.
