Description	Letter dated July 10, 1864 from Virginia Garland Moore Craig to her husband, U.S. Army Captain Seldon Frank Craig. In this six-page letter written from Baltimore, Maryland, she tells her husband about news of the July 9th Battle of Monocacy Junction between Confederate troops and the Union troops, including some "hundred days men", under General Lew Wallace. Union forces were routed, retreating to Baltimore, which raised fears around town that Confederate troops would be advancing on the city next. Mentioning her lack of faith in the commanders protecting Baltimore, she tells him about reports of rebel troops having taken over the Northern Central Railway. She also talks about relatives and friends, some of whom are Confederate sympathizers, just as she had been, she says, before meeting and marrying Captain Craig.

Biographical/Historical Note	Virginia Garland Moore Craig was born February 8, 1841 in Baltimore, Maryland. In April 1864, she married Seldon Frank Craig, who served in the the U.S. Army Sixth Michigan Infantry, which later became the U.S. Army Sixth Michigan Heavy Artillery. The two met while Captain Craig's regiment was stationed in Baltimore. Virginia Garland Moore Craig gave birth to two daughters, Marion (who died at age 6 in 1872) and Laura (born 1868, died 1956). She was widowed in 1899. She died in Baltimore in 1936.

Transcript	No 19 . Baltimore, July 10th 1864 . My Own Darling , I will write to you a few lines this afternoon for I may not have such another good opportunity, especially if the rebels come to Balto. [Baltimore] as most of the people here believe. We have had the excitement of last summer repeated here, to-day and last night . This morning I was awakened by the alarm bells calling out the Union League to arm themselves and prepare to meet the enemy. A great many have responded to the call and the different fortifications around the city are filled with citizens ready to drive back the invaders. I hope and believe that it is all for nothing as it was this time last year but the people seem to be very much frightened.
