Description	Letter dated April 3, 1865 from Virginia Garland Moore Craig to her husband, U.S. Army Captain Seldon Frank Craig. In this four-page letter written from Baltimore, Maryland, she tells him about news of the taking of Richmond and Petersburg, the surrender of General Robert E. Lee and his army, the festivities this news has generated in Baltimore, her husband's possible move to Mobile, and friends and family.

Biographical/Historical Note	Virginia Garland Moore Craig was born February 8, 1841 in Baltimore, Maryland. In April 1864, she married Seldon Frank Craig, who served in the the U.S. Army Sixth Michigan Infantry, which later became the U.S. Army Sixth Michigan Heavy Artillery. The two met while Captain Craig's regiment was stationed in Baltimore. Virginia Garland Moore Craig gave birth to two daughters, Marion (who died at age 6 in 1872) and Laura (born 1868, died 1956). She was widowed in 1899. She died in Baltimore in 1936.

My Own Darling , Your very welcome letter, dated March 7th and 10th was received this morning, and as I had waited two weeks for one, I was very much pleased at receiving it . This has been one of the happiest days of my life. What do you think of the glorious news? The taking of Richmond and Petersburg and the surrender of Lee and his army to our forces? Our city has been in a state of great excitement all day, in consequence of the joyful news. Flags are waving to the breeze in all directions and I never saw Baltimore St. so thronged with people, not even on the famous 19th, 20th, and 21st of April '61. The people seem wild with joy, and I have been so much excited all day and
