Description	Letter dated March 11 from U.S. Army Private Charles Thornton Moore to his mother, Martha Howison Moore. The letter was written from Fort Dix Relay House, a location about 9 miles to the southwest of Baltimore, Maryland. In the letter, he describes being sent to Ellicotts Mills for duty and discusses his pay. He also asks for information about family and friends at home. [Editor's note: The U.S. Army 11th Maryland Infantry was organized in 1864. In early 1865, some of the regiment was assigned to duty at the Relay House outside of Baltimore, Maryland. Therefore, it assumed that this letter was in 1865. Fort Dix was an area near the Relay House where troops where camped.]

Biographical/Historical Note	Charles Thornton Moore was born June 30, 1845. He served in the United States Army 2nd Maryland Infantry and the 11th Maryland Infantry. After the war, he returned to Baltimore, Maryland. He and his wife, Lavinia DeLacey Moore, had five children. He died on June 7, 1915.

Transcript	Fort Dix Relay House March 11th Dear Mother , I received your letter yesterday and was very glad to hear from you. I am still at the relay house and I think we will stay here our time out. I was sent up to Ellicotts Mills the other day on detached duty. I only staid there a day when I came back. We are having a very nice time here. The company was paid off about two weeks ago but I and Joe Wynn and four others did not get any pay because we were not mustered for pay and I was sick at home when the company was mustered. We were mustered for pay the last of last month and we expect to get paid about the 20th of this
