Description	Letter dated August 5 from U.S. Army Private Charles Thornton Moore to his mother, Martha Howison Moore. The letter was written from a military encampment about a mile from Fredericksburg, Virginia. In the letter, Moore describes traveling by boat from Newport News and indicates that his regiment has not yet been paid. He also mentions Confederate General Stonewall Jackson. [Editor's note: The U.S. Army 2nd Maryland Infantry was in Fredericksburg, Virginia August 2-7, 1862, after having moved from Newport News, Virginia. Therefore, it is assumed that the letter was written in 1862.]

Biographical/Historical Note	Charles Thornton Moore was born June 30, 1845. He served in the United States Army 2nd Maryland Infantry and the 11th Maryland Infantry. After the war, he returned to Baltimore, Maryland. He and his wife, Lavinia DeLacey Moore, had five children. He died on June 7, 1915.

Transcript	Fredericksburg Va Aug the 5th Dear Mother , I arrived here this morning. I am very much pleased with the place. It is nothing but great high hills. We are encamped about a mile from Fredericksburg on a hill. We can see for miles around. We landed at the wharf at a quiet creek about twelve o’clock last night and we kept busy all night unloading our boats. We left in the morning for Fredericksburg.
