[No 6836] This Indented BILL of Two Thirds of a DOLLAR, shall entitle the Bearer hereof to receive Bills of Exchange payable in LONDON, or Gold and Silver, at the Rate of Four Shillings and Six-pence Sterling per Dollar for the said Bill, according to the Directions of an Act of Assembly of MARYLAND. Dated in ANNAPOLIS, this Tenth Day of April, Anno Domini MDCCLXXIV . J [John] Clapham W [William] Eddis
Description	Obverse of Maryland two-thirds dollar note dated April 10, 1774 and signed J [John] Clapham (left) and Wm [William] Eddis (right). The serial number (6836) and signatures are handwritten in what appears to be brown ink. Below the upper border is a line of six engravings of hands and daggers divided by the engraving of a crown within brackets. Marks meant to discourage counterfeiting include a caret under the letter "h" in the word Thirds, a lowercase epsilon used in place of the letter "c" in the words Directions and Act, and an acute mark over the first letter "i" in the word Domini. Embedded in the top border design are the letters "IG" for Jonas Green, the original printer-designer, and "TS" for Thomas Sparrow, the engraver (sculptor) of the borders and of the seal of Maryland, positioned right of the central text. (TS" are also embedded in the left border design (center).) Below the seal is the Latin inscription Crescite et Multiplicamini, which means Increase and Multiply . (Editor's note: One wonders why the motto Crescite et Multiplicamini was chosen, since the official motto on the Calvert family coat-of-arms, on which the seal was based, was Fatti Maschii Parole Femine, i.e., Strong in Deeds, Gentle in Words.)
