Description	In this undated letter believed to have been written in December 1854 from Lowell, Massachusetts, Annie (Mrs. Nancy Heywood) Richmond in a playful but sympathetic tone wishes Muddie (Maria Clemm) better health, trying to raise her spirits by promising, when the time comes, to nurse Muddie through her final illness. She also discusses a newly published book entitled "Ruth Hall" whose author had received much criticism in the press for her portrayal of family life, especially after the author's true identity became known. Written by popular writer Fanny Fern, the pseudonym of Sara Payson Willis (Mrs. Parton), and published in 1854, this semi-autobiographical novel satarizes the treatment of girls and women in society by ridiculing her treatment at the hands of her father Nathaniel Willis and her brother Nathaniel Parker Willis. Nathaniel Parker Willis had been a friend of Edgar Allan Poe's and later would try to help Maria Clemm raise money for a Poe gravestone (see items scpc014 and scpc015). Nathaniel Willis had for many years published a newspaper for children entitled "Youth's Companion." It is what Annie Richmond is referring to when she says, "I learned to love him [the older Willis], as soon as I learned to read." (Editor's note: Scholars base the dating of this letter on two factors: the publication date of "Ruth Hall" (late 1854) and the mention of an upcoming Christmas party (December).)
