Statement of Purpose
The purpose of this project is to provide a clearer understanding of the Korean
War, and especially the role of blacks in the conflict, through an interview with Mr.
Vincente Van Allen, an African- American veteran of the war. The Korean War is often
termed “ the forgotten war,” due to both it’s limited results, and the fact that it falls
between World War II and Vietnam. Despite this reputation, over 33,000 UN soldiers
died in the conflict, so it is important that we remember this not as the insignificant war it
is currently viewed as, but as the important part of Cold War- era history that it deserves.
