The Pursuit of a Better Life:
The Immigration of Jewish Displaced Persons Post-World War II
Interviewer: B. Yeo
Interviewee: Sam Gejdenson
Date: February 17, 2009
Statement of Purpose
The purpose of this Oral History interview and project is to gain a greater
knowledge of the lives of those who emigrated to the United States in the wake of World
War II. The experience of former Congressman Sam Gejdenson, who entered the United
States in 1949, castes light on the experience of Jewish refugees who arrived on
America’s shores after the War. Another important facet of this project is to understand
how Mr. Gejdenson’s experiences as an immigrant and the child of Holocaust survivors
influenced his views as a U.S. politician on immigration, human rights, and democratic
values.
