Description
Photograph
of a
hand-colored
map
entitled
Nova
Virginiae
Tabula
,
i.e.
,
New
Map
of
Virginia
,
published
by
Willem
Janszoon
Blaeu
(1571-1638)
in
1631
.
Printed
text
with a
description
of
Virginia
appears
on the
back
(page
9
and
probably
unnumbered
page
12)
.
Besides
showing
Virginia
, this
map
also
shows
the
area
that
became
Maryland
on
June
20
,
1632
,
when
Charles
I
granted
the
charter
to
Cecil
Calvert
. This
map
is
based
on the
1612
map
of
Virginia
by
Captain
John
Smith
(1580-1631)
and on
Jodocus
Hondius
'
(1594
or
5-1629)
later
rendering
of that
map
. As in
Smith's
map
, the
direction
of
north
is
to the
right
, and
Native
American
Indian
words
,
e.g.
, "
Patawomeck
" for
Potomac
(River)
, are
used
to
identify
various
bodies
of
water
and
other
landmarks
.
Blaeu
(or
Hondius)
took
liberties
with
features
of
Smith's
map
:
note
the
inclusion
of
mountains
in the
southern
areas
of the
Eastern
Shore
,
which
have
none
, and the
elimination
of
various
tree
types
. In the
upper
left-hand
corner
of the
map
is
a
depiction
of
Chief
Powhatan
in his
lodge
. In the
upper
right-hand
corner
is
a
depiction
of the
British
Royal
Family
coat
of
arms
during
the
reigns
of
James
I
through
James
II
,
i.e.
,
1603-1688
, and, to its
right
, a
cartouche
containing
the
map's
legend
.
Below
this
is
a
rendering
of a
Native
American
Indian
of the
Susquehannock
tribe
standing
and
facing
away
from the
Chesapeake
Bay
. In the
low
center
of the
map
is
a
cartouche
containing
a
graphic
depiction
of
distance
and of the
name
of the
publisher
,
Guiljelmi
Blaeuw
.
Just
below
this
is
the
name
of the
engraver
(Sculpt.)
,
D
.
Grijp
(Dirck
Gryp)
. The
story
goes
that
when
Jodocus
Hondius
(1594/5-1629)
died
, his
widow
sold
a
collection
of his
maps
on
copperplate
to
Blaeu
,
who
then
reprinted
and
hand-painted
them
under
his
own
name
.
Still
visible
beneath
Blaeu's
name
in the
low
center
cartouche
is
a
shadow
of
Hondius
'
name
.
