Democratic stump speech for Grover Cleveland to Eastern Shore Democratic Club in Talbot County

              It is a pleasure, in fact I regard it as a privilege to visit the Eastern Shore of Maryland. While I believe that no city in the Union has more attractions than Baltimore, I know, there is no section of the State more favored by nature than the Eastern Shore. Here can be found everything to make life comfortable. Your fertile fields, your sunny skies, your hospitable homes, your fair women, the products of the noble bay on whose shores your counties lie, the rivers, their names made familiar by the luxuries they produce- all tend toward making your section a delightful place to come to and a difficult one to go away from. I always visit it with pleasure and leave it with regret.

It is regarded as an unwritten law, that the man who occupies the office which I hold in Baltimore, shall not take an active part in politics in that City--this custom, however, does not prevent my appearance on what we call "the stump" away from home, and therefore when your invitation came to take part in this gathering of the Democracy of Talbot County, I did not hesitate to accept.

I have been with you before; I knew I would receive a warm welcome, and I considered it a privilege to come again.

To quote from the language of our party leader whose election we are here to advocate, "I am a Democrat, because I believe, that if rightly administered and applied, Democratic doctrines and measures will insure the prosperity, contentment, and happiness of the people." These are the words of Grover Cleveland, who as Mayor of Buffalo, Governor of New York, and President of the United States, illustrated in every act of his administrations the truth of his own saying, that "Public office is a public trust," [sic]

Mr. Cleveland is a platform in himself. He is not untried, the Country knows that it may expect when the reins of power are placed in his hands, an honest, faithful, able administration, in
