An Incident of the Mayor[']s Office

One day in the summer of 1885 during my fourth term as Mayor of Baltimore the late Mr G. W. Harvey called to see me at the City Hall. I had known Mr Harvey for some years as a prominent real estate agent. He asked if I knew Mrs Caroline Donovan. I replied that I did not. Mr Harvey stated that she was a wealthy lady, advanced in age, residing about three miles for Baltimore on the Catonsville road; that he had attended to her business for many years. He said she had requested him to ask if I could conveniently drive out some afternoon to see her on a business matter. I replied that it would give me pleasure to comply with her request. The next evening I drove out to her house. It was a plain, comfortable, frame dwelling, a porch in front and quite a large back building with side porch in the rear. Back of the house was a stable. There was a well kept lawn and a fine vegetable garden. I left my horse and wagon at the stable to which
