in the
Fairfield
District
of
South
Carolina
. His
family
moved
to
Mississippi
in
1847
,
settling
in
Winston
County
.
During
the
Civil
War
, he
enlisted
in the
Confederate
Army
. He was a
member
of
Company
D
,
New
Prospect
Grays
,
which
were
mustered
into
service
on
August
.
12
,
1861
in
Louisville
,
Mississippi
. The
Company
became
part
of the
5th
Missississippi
Infantry
Regiment
,
4th
Brigade
.
Thompson
was
wounded
in the
Battle
of
Franklin
,
Tennessee
,
which
took
place
on
November
30
,
1864
. He was
brought
to the
house
of the
local
Dotson
family
on
December
1
,
1864
, and
died
of his
wounds
three
weeks
later
on
December
23
,
1864
. He was
survived
by his
wife
,
Martha
Elizabeth
Thompson
(nee
Kennedy)
, and
three
children
.
