Description	Letter dated August 30, 1864 from Major J. W. (Joseph Waln) Wistar, 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry, to the Adjutant General, Department of the Susquehanna. In this one-page letter Major Wistar requests twenty (20) days leave. He explains that he has been recuperating at McClellan U.S. Army General Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from a gunshot wound to his left side received near Reams Station on the Weldon Railroad south of Petersburg, Virginia. Apparently assuming he will be granted leave, he gives his residence on Church Lane in Germantown as the address where the army will be able to reach him.
Transcript	McClellan U.S.A[.] Gen'l Hospital Philad[elphi]a Aug. 30th 1864 To The Adjutant General Department of the Susquehanna Sir , I have the honor to apply for leave of absence for twenty (20) days. Suffering from the effects of a wound in the left side recieved [sic] in the action of Aug. 23rd on the Weldon Rl. Rd. [Rail Road] My Post Office address will be Church Lane Germantown Philad[elphi]a . Very Respectfully Your Obdt. Servt. [Obedient Servant] J. W. Wistar Maj. 8th Penna [Pennsylvania] Cavalry

Biographical/Historical Note	Joseph Waln Wistar was born in 1841 and grew up near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. According to official records, he enlisted and received his commission as a first lieutenant in the 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry on September 17, 1861. He was promoted to full captain on January 1, 1862 and to full major on December 23, 1863. Wounded on August 23, 1864 at the Reams Station during the siege of Petersburg, Virginia, he was transferred to a hospital in Philadelphia, where he was discharged later that year. He is believed to have died in Erie, Pennsylvania on October 2, 1906.
