Roper Military Prison
Charleston Sept 6th/64
Dear Uncle
I was taken prisoner on the 24th of June, and find that some of one[']s experience under such circumstances is not remarkable[;] pleasant though at present we have all that one could expect. Our quarters are very pleasant, and [we] are treated with a great deal of courtesy and kindness[.]
My health has been rather delicate, though am now out of hospital and much improved.
Please do me the favour [sic] to send me by express about ten or fifteen dollars in gold, and notify father of the fact. With love to all I remain affectionately your nephew
