Port Hudson, La., Nov. 27th, 1863.
Com'd'g Officer
Co. A, 6th Mich[igan] Artillery
Sir:
Your attention is directed to the following extract from a report made by the Field Officer of the Day for Nov. 26th:
Would call the attention of the Col. Com'd'g [Colonel Commanding] to the Company of artillery stationed outside the Sally Port near the Grand Guard of 2' Brig., 2' Dn., C. d. A. [2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, Corps De Afrique] As I rode up in the forenoon to the officer of that Guard I told him to never mind turning out his Guard. The Officers of the Battery (One of them) made the remark--Never mind you damned nigger and several insulting remarks in reference to colored soldiers in presence of a number of privates of his command, causing quite a laughter and merriment among them.
If complaint of this kind again occurs, it will be brought to the notice of the General Commanding.
By Command
Chas. B. Gaskill, A.A.A.G.
Col. Jno. B. Weber, Comd'g. Brigade.
