Description	Letter dated November 27, 1863 from Port Hudson, Louisiana written by Captain Charles B. Gaskill, who was the Acting Assistant Adjutant General, and Colonel John B. Weber. The letter was written to the Commanding Officer of Company A of the Sixth Michigan Artillery. The letter describes an incident that occurred the previous day, in which soldiers of the Sixth Michigan Artillery stationed on guard outside a sally port (i.e. secured entrypoint) made derogatory remarks in reference to African American soldiers. The letter informs the Sixth Michigan Artillery officer that if further complaints of this nature are received about soldiers under his command, the commanding General will be notified.
Transcript	Hd. Qrs., 2' Brig., 2' Dn., C. d. Afr. [Headquarters, 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, Corps De Afrique] Port Hudson, La., Nov. 27th, 1863 . Com'd'g Officer Co. A, 6th Mich[igan] Artillery Sir : Your attention is directed to the following extract from a report made by the Field Officer of the Day for Nov. 26th : Would call the attention of the Col. Com'd'g [Colonel Commanding] to the Company of artillery stationed outside the Sally Port near the Grand Guard of 2' Brig., 2' Dn., C. d. A. [2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, Corps De Afrique] As I rode up in the forenoon to the officer of that Guard I told him to never mind turning out his Guard. The Officers of the Battery (One of them) made the remark--Never mind you damned nigger and several insulting remarks in reference to colored soldiers in presence of a number of privates of his command, causing quite a laughter and merriment among them . Biographical/Historical Note	Captain Seldon Frank Craig was in command of Company A of the 6th Michigan Artillery at the time this letter was written. Charles B. Gaskill and John B. Weber were commanding officers of regiments of the United States Colored Troops (U.S.C.T.). Gaskill was serving as a captain in the 78th United States Colored Infantry, and Weber was the colonel in command of the 89th United States Colored Infantry. Gaskill and Weber began their military service in all white regiments of the United States Army, but chose to accept officers appointments in the U.S.C.T., where they commanded African American troops. After the war, John B. Weber served in the United States House of Representatives from 1885-1889, representing the state of New York.
