When war's dread trump first fill'd the air, And echoed loud through all our land, Brave loyal hearts then rallied where Our coontry's [sic] foes in fear did stand. Chorus - Oh! be true, - Oh! be true, True to our beautiful flag so free, Oh! be true - Oh! be true, True to our beautiful Flag,
Among the brave who eager came, To nobly fight for Freedom's cause, Was KENLY, of "1st," whose name Such pride of honored memory draws.
He marched with a bold and fearless band, And knew that dangers they should face, But honor, pride, and Maryland, Through them in History sought a place.
They went to save our country's Flag, These relics of "Old Maryland Line," And scouted vallies [sic] - mountain's craig [sic], The treacherous rebels there to find.
When in the fight with foes around, Who dared not seek an honored fight, Brave Kenly with his boys was found, Nobly contending four fold might.
Hemmed by thousands on every side, Whose murderous vollies [sic] rattled in, ''Surrender, Never, Kenly cried," Whose voice was heard o'er battle's din.
They fought 'gainst vast outnumbering foes, Their cannons roared and bayonets flash'd, And Southern chivalry with fierce blows, Wounded, disabled soldiers gashed.
No succor came to this brave band, Who won such glory in the day, Alas our First from Maryland, Was made to stand the battle fray.
They fell like martyrs on the plain, And for their country gave each life, No more will that brave band again, Be welcomed home, or back to strife.
Then rouse! old Maryland in might, Avenge! avenge! each murder'd friend, Rush on in bloody, thickest fight, And down to Hell the rebels send.
Bright in your hearts enshrine each name, Of Kenly's band who bravely fell, Let History speak their honor'd fame, While the sad history it doth tell.
