We are the boys that's gay and happy, Fearing naught what the rebels may bring, Care and sorrow left behind us, Merrily, merrily, still we sing. Description	Document containing the broadside entitled "Battle of Hagers' Town Road. The Rebels Are Skedadling [sic] Out of My Maryland, and leaving all their 'Stolen goods behind'" sung to the popular Confederate tune "Gay and Happy." This broadside, an answer to the Confederate song, praises Marylander John R. Kenly who, as colonel, valiantly led Union troops of the First Maryland Infantry at the Battle of Front Royal, Virginia and later, as general, led the Maryland brigade helping to secure the road between Hagerstown and Williamsport after the main action at the Battle of Antietam had occurred. Between the first line of the title and the rest of the title is a drawing of a town. The title, the drawing, and all of the verses are displayed within a decorative border. Centered above the border and stamped in maroon ink are the words "Enoch Pratt [Free Library]" and, below them, "MARYLAND D[EPT.]" (Editor's note: According to the Baltimore Sun of Dec. 24, 1895, "Gay and Happy" is the more familiar title for "Camp Song of the Maryland Line" and its composition has usually been attributed to Thomas F. Roche, a Confederate Marylander and member of Maryland Company of the Twenty-first Virginia Regiment. In the prior digital version of this broadside, however, the author was listed as Frank Key Howard, grandson of Francis Scott Key and John Eager Howard and editor of the Baltimore "Daily Exchange" newspaper, who was imprisoned for writing an editorial critical of imprisonment without due process. Although the date this broadside was published was given as 1861 in the prior digital version, the date would have to be between August 22, 1862 (Kenly's promotion to general) or September 17, 1862 (Battle of Antietam) and May 10, 1863 (Jackson's death). R. M. Chambers is believed to be the publisher. Part of the right upper section of the broadside is torn off; thus to provide an accurate transcript we reviewed a full alternate copy of the same broadside.
