Description
Photograph
of a
black
and
white
(paper
appears
to have
faded
to a
gray-brown)
map
entitled
Nova
Virginiae
Tabula
,
i.e.
,
New
Map
of
Virginia
,
published
by
John
Ogilby
(1597-1651)
in
1671
.
Appearing
in an
English
translation
of a
Dutch
book
published
by
Arnoldus
Montanus
(1625?-1683)
, this
map
shows
,
besides
Virginia
, the
area
that
became
Maryland
on
June
20
,
1632
,
when
Charles
I
granted
the
charter
to
Cecil
Calvert
.
(This
change
is
not
reflected
in the
map
,
suggesting
an
earlier
date
or
source
for the
map's
creation.)
As in
Captain
John
Smith's
1812
map
of
Virginia
, the
direction
of
north
is
to the
right
, and
Native
American
Indian
words
,
e.g.
, "
Cheseapeake
" for
Chesapeake
(Bay)
, are
used
to
identify
various
bodies
of
water
and
other
landmarks
.
Compared
with
Smith's
earlier
map
, this
map
contains
some
inaccuracies
:
note
the
inclusion
of
mountains
in the
southern
areas
of the
Eastern
Shore
,
which
have
none
, and the
elimination
of
various
tree
types
. In the
upper
left-hand
corner
is
a
scroll
held
by
two
cherubs
,
showing
the
map's
title
. In the
upper
center
is
a
depiction
of a
shield
showing
the
British
Royal
Family
coat
of
arms
during
the
reigns
of
James
I
through
James
II
,
i.e.
,
1603-1688
. In the
upper
right-hand
corner
is
a
cartouche
containing
the
map's
legend
and, to its
left
, a
rendering
of
two
Native
American
Indians
, a
llama
(another
map
inaccuracy
, in that
llamas
are
native
only
to
South
America)
, and
two
goats
. In the
lower
center
of the
map
is
a
cartouche
surrounded
by
three
cherubs
providing
a
graphic
depiction
of
distance
.
