Description
Map
of
Maryland
and
Delaware
believed
to be
published
in
1878
by the
Maryland
and
Delaware
Ship
Canal
Company
with
Horace
B
.
Tebbetts
its
president
. In the
lower
left-hand
corner
is
the
name

. In the
lower
right-hand
corner

the
purpose
for
both
the
map
and the
Ship
Canal
Company
.
According
to the
cartouche
, the
Maryland
and
Delaware
Ship
Canal
Company
received
its
charter
from the
State
of
Maryland
in
1872
and from the
State
of
Delaware
in
1873
. Its
purpose
was "to
connect
the
Chesapeake
and
Delaware
bays
by
construction
of a
Ship
Canal
without
locks
, by the
way
of the
Sassafras
River
17
miles
long
,
25
feet
in
depth
and
100
feet
wide
,
capable
of
admitting
the
largest
naval

merchant
ships.
" By this
means
the
builders
thought
to "
shorten
the
distance
by
sea
from
Baltimore
to
New
York
and
Europe
,
225
miles.
" This
new
canal
was to
differ
from the
existing
Chesapeake
and
Delaware
Canal
to its
northwest
, in that
it
would be
constructed
without
locks
, be
deeper
and
wider
,
allowing
deeper
draft
vessels
to
travel
its
length
, and
cost
less
to
run
and
maintain
.
(Editor's
note
:
Although
this
map
is
thought
to be

indicate
a
map
similar
to this was

in
1873.)
