clock
is
located
in the
interior
of the
dome
above
the
Mansard
roof
at the
center
of the
building
. The
dials
of the
plate
glass
clock
faces
are
situated
at the
cardinal
points
,
so
the
clock
face
just
above
the
triangular
pediment
faces
east
. The
original
clock
and
works
were
made
in
Baltimore
by
August
Hahl
&
Company
. The
original
movements
were
controlled
by an
electric
regulator
located
on the
first
floor
of the
tower
below
the
dome
. At
one
time
, the
movements
of
all
the
clocks
in the
City
Hall
building
were
controlled
by the
tower
clock's
mechanism
. In the
1940s
, the
movement
was
replaced
by an
IBM
impulse
system
,
later
enhanced
in the
early
1960s
with a
direct
drive
motor
consisting
of a
small
cage
with a
reduction
gear
motor
. The
hours
are
struck
on a
bell
that
is
located
in the
lantern
above
the
dome
. The
original
bell
,
known
as
Big
Sam
, was
replaced
around
the
turn
of the
century
by the
Lord
Baltimore
,
which
was
cast
in
1899
. The
net
weight
of the
Lord
Baltimore
is
7403
pounds
.
Where
the
clock
hammer
strikes
the
bell
is
five
inches
thick
.
It
is
said
that
violinists
can
tune
their
instruments
by its
true
pitch
of A.
